February, 2009

Dear Community Members of School Union #29,

As Superintendent of School Union #29, I have the privilege of being reminded constantly of what a unique opportunity it is to serve our school district.  We have an amazing group of students and staff along with a community that supports our schools. Although there are a variety of challenges that lie ahead, it is a nice feeling to know that the residents of Poland, Mechanic Falls and Minot strongly support our mission and schools.

To walk in to anyone of our schools you will be amazed at the great stories, learning experiences and achievements that occur everyday at Poland Regional High School, Whittier Middle School, Poland Community School, Elm Street School and Minot Consolidated School. The classrooms are alive with stories of our kids, their teachers and our community; they are what give School Union #29 its vibrancy.  Our schools are a wonderful place for students to learn and work and I invite you to schedule a time to come in and witness or be part of all the great things are kids receive on a daily basis.

I cannot even begin to thank our three communities enough for the overwhelming support you gave our School Reorganization Plan this past November 2nd when you approved our school consolidation plan by an overwhelming 84 %.  This is a credit to the Regional Planning Committee who worked hard to develop a sound reorganizational plan, and to the community for believing in our schools.  As we continue moving through this year and prepare to become Regional School Unit #16 on July 1, 2009, I encourage you to be part of and ask questions as we develop our school budget for 2009/2010.  There will be cost efficiencies and necessary changes in how we operate our schools, but we will make sure our students receive the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in the 21st century global economy.

Once again, thank you for all you do for our children and reaching out to support our schools.  I encourage you to email or call me at 998-1212, ext 108 or stop in.  The challenges we face are great, but it is definitely made easier working with such a great community.

Sincerely,

Dennis J. Duquette
